Han Solo – Vintage Star Wars
En una galaxia muy cercana hizo su aparición Han Solo, una de las ocho figuras que se sumaron en 1978 luego de la venta del “Early Bird Certificate” de 1977. Esta figura se vendía de forma directa en las tiendas, junto con C-3PO, Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jawa, Sand People y Death Squad Commander. De esta forma parte del exclusivo grupo conocido como las 12 primeras, y que son las consideradas para ubicar dentro del diorama que venía con la entrega de figuras tempranas por correo.
La primera versión de esta figura tenía la cabeza pequeña respecto al tamaño de otras figuras de la colección. Recordemos que todas las figuras siguen el patrón de tamaño respecto a la primera que se hizo, la de Luke Skywalker. Dado el poco parecido del esculpido de la cabeza respecto a Harrison Ford, es que Kenner hizo un nuevo molde con una cabeza más grande, manteniendo el cuerpo, el que se suponía se parecía más al actor (a mi juicio, ninguna de las vintage de algún humanoide tiene parecido exacto a los actores). El hecho de darle más detalle hizo que la cabeza quedara levemente más grande de lo que debía, además de mantener el cuerpo.
La primera figura se conoce como la “small-head” y la segunda figura como “large-head”. El cambio se hizo en el cartón de Star Wars 12C. A pesar de esto, existen versiones de figuras selladas con la “small-head” en las colecciones de Empire Strikes Back y Return of The Jedi. Esto se ha debido a que los minoristas a menudo enviaban figuras al fabricante para que las empaquetaran nuevamente cuando salían nuevos cartones.
Netflix: Christmas Chronicles
En el año 2018, Netflix lanzó una película de Navidad llamada “Christmas Chronicles” (Crónicas de Navidad), en que tras estrellar sin querer el trineo más famoso del mundo, dos hermanos deberán pasarse toda la noche con un Santa muy particular para salvar la Navidad.
En la película, protagonizada por Kurt Russell, Santa es arrestado cuando su misión de entregar los regalos a todo el mundo en la víspera de Navidad empeora. En la estación de policía, intenta persuadir a los policías de que realmente es el verdadero Santa presentándole al oficial que lo arrestó los regalos que quería cuando tenía 6 años, que incluían un auto Hot Wheels, un Snoopy astronauta, un GiJoe y un Han Solo Vintage Kenner.
Por el estado del cartón y la burbuja pareciera ser que el juguete de Han Solo es un repack con un cartón Kenner de la colección Star Wars, y claro con una figura vintage del personaje.
1983 Kenner Commercial
Este comercial de Kenner del año 1983 se debe haber producido para el lanzamiento de la décima ola de figuras en que, entre otras, corresponden a Logray, Chief Chirpa y Biker Scout. Por este motivo, utilizan a Han Solo clásico y no su versión “In Trench Coat” que sería lanzada en la ola siguiente durante el año 1984.
In a very nearby galaxy, Han Solo made his appearance—one of the eight figures added in 1978 after the sale of the 1977 “Early Bird Certificate.” This figure was sold directly in stores, along with C-3PO, Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jawa, Sand People, and Death Squad Commander. In this way, he became part of the exclusive group known as the First 12, which are the figures intended to be placed inside the diorama included with the early mail-away figure set.
The first version of this figure had a small head compared to the size of other figures in the collection. Remember that all figures follow the size pattern established by the first one produced: Luke Skywalker. Because the sculpt of the head did not resemble Harrison Ford very well, Kenner created a new mold with a larger head while keeping the same body, which was supposedly closer to the actor’s proportions (in my opinion, none of the vintage humanoid figures look exactly like the actors). Adding more detail resulted in the head becoming slightly larger than it should have been, while the body remained the same.
The first figure is known as the “small-head,” and the second as the “large-head.” The change was made on the Star Wars 12C cardback. Despite this, sealed versions of the “small-head” figure exist within the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi collections. This happened because retailers often sent figures back to the manufacturer to be repackaged when new cardbacks were released.
Netflix: Christmas Chronicles
In 2018, Netflix released a Christmas movie called “Christmas Chronicles,” in which, after accidentally crashing the most famous sleigh in the world, two siblings must spend the entire night with a very unusual Santa to save Christmas.
In the film, starring Kurt Russell, Santa is arrested when his mission to deliver gifts around the world on Christmas Eve goes wrong. At the police station, he tries to convince the officers that he is the real Santa by showing the arresting officer the gifts he wanted when he was six years old, which included a Hot Wheels car, an astronaut Snoopy, a G.I. Joe, and a Vintage Kenner Han Solo.
Judging by the condition of the cardback and bubble, it appears that the Han Solo toy is a repack using a Kenner Star Wars cardback, along with a vintage figure of the character.
1983 Kenner Commercial
This 1983 Kenner commercial was likely produced for the release of the tenth wave of figures, which included Logray, Chief Chirpa, and Biker Scout, among others. For this reason, they used the classic Han Solo and not his “In Trench Coat” version, which would be released in the following wave during 1984.
