Popy ポピー, las figuras Empire Strikes Back para Japón
Popy ポピー, las figuras ESB para Japón entraron al mercado en 1980. Esta empresa japonesa, comenzó a lanzar sus propias líneas de productos de Star Wars. Al igual que General Mills usaba Kenner como nombre de una empresa subsidiaria para su línea de juguetes, Popy era el nombre de una empresa subsidiaria de Bandai, lo que permitía al consumidor distinguir la diferencia entre ciertos juguetes y modelos que estaban tratando de comprar.
Con la línea de productos Popy para Empire Strikes Back, se diseñó un nuevo estilo de empaque para las figuras de Star Wars. Albergó los juguetes dentro de una caja compacta y etiquetó el producto específicamente para el mercado japonés. La idea del empaque de la caja es posiblemente debido a que permitía exhibir más mercancía en un área más pequeña. Para colmo, la línea Popy era un poco más barata que la línea Takara, lo que por supuesto le daba un poco más de atractivo. La línea de productos de Popy terminó produciendo 15 figuras en el momento para el Imperio Contraataca.

Los colores y los gráficos del contenedor y de todas las cajas en su conjunto hacen de esta pieza algo bastante llamativo y atractivo. Me llama la atención que haya un texto en inglés para “World Hero” abajo. Estas cajitas tenían un tamaño de unas 4,5″. Hay que tomar en cuenta que las figuras miden, por convención, 3 3/4″.
Tener en cuenta que la gracia de esta línea son sus envases y no sus figuras propiamente tal, ya que estas fueron fabricadas por Kenner y tienen las mismas cualidades de las figuras distribuidas en USA. Estas cajas tenían un código que partía con la letra S y luego el número, que avanzaba desde el 1 hasta el 15.
Las quince figuras de Popy corresponden a Boba Fett, Darth Vader, R2-D2. C-3PO, Luke Skywalker in Bespin outfit, Han Solo in Hoth outift, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo (bighead), Hoth Stormtrooper, Death Star Droid, Rebel Soldier, Luke Skywalker in X-wing pilot gear, R5-D4 y Stormtrooper.

Just as General Mills used Kenner as the name of a subsidiary company for its toy line, Popy was the name of a subsidiary of Bandai, allowing consumers to distinguish between certain toys and models they were trying to purchase.
With the Popy product line for The Empire Strikes Back, a new packaging style was designed for Star Wars figures. It housed the toys inside a compact box and labeled the product specifically for the Japanese market. The idea behind the box-style packaging was likely that it allowed more merchandise to be displayed in a smaller area. To top it off, the Popy line was slightly cheaper than the Takara line, which of course made it more appealing. The Popy product line ultimately produced 15 figures at the time for The Empire Strikes Back.

The colors and graphics of the container and all the boxes together make this piece quite striking and attractive. It catches my attention that there is English text reading “World Hero” at the bottom. These little boxes measured about 4.5″. Keep in mind that the figures measure, by convention, 3¾″.
It is important to note that the charm of this line lies in its packaging and not in the figures themselves, since these were manufactured by Kenner and have the same qualities as the figures distributed in the USA. These boxes had a code beginning with the letter S followed by a number, progressing from 1 to 15.
