Proud Theme 6
El primer tema que no fuera soundtrack de la película Star Wars que utilizó Kenner en sus comerciales fue Proud Theme 6 de Keith Mansfield, el que fue lanzado en el año 1972 y publicado por KPM Music Ltd bajo el disco KPM 1095.
Keith Mansfield fue un compositor y arreglador británico conocido por sus prominentes creaciones de temas para televisión. Su música fue utilizada en videos de los mejores momentos de los equipos de la NFL Films y en programas de la Super Bowl. Él fue el arreglador de la canción “Reflections of My Life” de la banda Marmalade.
En el segundo 20 comienza la parte más reconocible.
En este comercial Kenner de 1978 de la Tie Fighter de Darth Vader se puede escuchar este tema de fondo.
Hay una versión más rápida de Proud Theme 6, que revisando con todo el resto de Proud Theme que aparecen en el disco no corresponde a ninguno. No he encontrado otro disco de Mansfield donde aparezca esta versión. Pareciera ser que se asemeja más a lo que se escucha en el comercial. Si es así, ¿Habrá sido que grabaron una versión especial para Kenner?
March Concord
En los primeros años, también se utilizó un segundo tema del que lamentablemente no he logrado encontrar mayor información de nombre March Concord, compuesto por Stanley Black y producido por De Wolf Music.
Como ejemplo, este tema fue utilizado en el comercial de 1979 del Millenium Falcon.
En la interpretación de la Banda da Sociedade Filarmónica União Seixalense, dirigida por Armindo Luís y grabada en el disco Marés de 2005 se puede escuchar la versión completa de la misma.
Fourth Dimension
El quizás que se tiene más en la retina de muchos, tal vez por ser usado en muchas más veces desde 1980, fue uno que proviene de un LP de 1979 producido por Music de Wolfe y titulado Thrust.
Este álbum presenta música compuesta por el fallecido Jack Trombey, cuyo nombre real era Jan Stoeckart. La pista número 2 de nombre “Fourth Dimension” es, probablemente, una de las melodías vintage de Kenner Star Wars más icónicas. Este tema se usó esencialmente durante los comerciales de la era de The Empire Strikes Back y en algunos de los primeros de Return of the Jedi, estando al aire más tiempo que sus predecesoras.
Por ejemplo, en el comercial de 1983 para la nueva figura de Nien Nunb se utiliza este tema.
La música de Jack también fue utilizada por NFL Films y como tema para el programa previo al juego The NFL Today de CBS Sports desde mediados de la década de 1970 hasta principios de la década de 1980, e incluso con nuevos arreglos hasta finales de la década de 1990.
Un nuevo tema desconocido
Para comerciales más nuevos de la colección El Regreso del Jedi, se utilizó otro tema, que se puede escuchar a continuación. Aún lo estoy investigando sin poder encontrar su autoría.
Este tema es utilizado, por ejemplo, en el comercial de Sy Snootles and Rebo Band.
Proud Theme 6
The first non–Star Wars–soundtrack piece of music that Kenner used in its commercials was “Proud Theme 6” by Keith Mansfield, released in 1972 and published by KPM Music Ltd. on the album KPM 1095.
Keith Mansfield was a British composer and arranger known for his prominent television themes. His music was used in highlight reels for NFL Films and in Super Bowl programming. He was also the arranger of the song “Reflections of My Life” by the band Marmalade.
The most recognizable part begins at the 20‑second mark.
This 1978 Kenner commercial for Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter features the theme in the background.
There is a faster version of “Proud Theme 6” which, after comparing it with all the other Proud Themes on the album, does not correspond to any of them. I have not found another Mansfield album containing this version. It seems to resemble more closely what is heard in the commercial. If so, could it be that a special version was recorded specifically for Kenner?
March Concord
In the early years, a second theme was also used — for which I unfortunately had not been able to find much information — titled “March Concord,” composed by Stanley Black and produced by De Wolfe Music.
For example, this theme was used in the 1979 commercial for the Millennium Falcon.
In the performance by the Banda da Sociedade Filarmónica União Seixalense, conducted by Armindo Luís and recorded on the 2005 album *Marés*, the full version can be heard.
Fourth Dimension
The one that many people remember most vividly — likely because it was used far more frequently from 1980 onward — comes from a 1979 LP produced by Music de Wolfe and titled Thrust.
This album features music composed by the late Jack Trombey, whose real name was Jan Stoeckart. Track number 2, “Fourth Dimension,” is probably one of the most iconic vintage Kenner Star Wars melodies. This theme was used extensively during commercials from the *The Empire Strikes Back* era and in some early *Return of the Jedi* spots, remaining on the air longer than its predecessors.
For example, this theme is used in the 1983 commercial for the new Nien Nunb figure.
Jack’s music was also used by NFL Films and as the theme for the pre‑game show The NFL Today on CBS Sports from the mid‑1970s to the early 1980s, and even with new arrangements into the late 1990s.
A new unknown theme
For later commercials from the *Return of the Jedi* collection, another theme was used, which can be heard below. I am still researching it and have not yet been able to identify its authorship.
This theme is used, for example, in the commercial for Sy Snootles and the Rebo Band.
