1984 – Jedi (Star Wars)

1985 – He-Man

1987 – Thundercats

1988 – Transformers

During the era of the Return of the Jedi collection, various promotions for the sale of these figures appeared in several European countries, especially in Spain, Italy, and Germany. I do not know the specific reason, but I imagine it was either to take advantage of the saga’s popularity or to liquidate Kenner stock, since these figures were released between 1984 and 1985.

YPS – Germany

In the German magazine YPS, a Snowtrooper (Hoth Stormtrooper) figure was included as a promotional item. Some sources mention that this figure would be a PBP due to its Spanish origin, and that it would be identical to those from that manufacturer. However, according to my research, PBP did not release a specific Snowtrooper figure; of course, the COO was removed. On the other hand, the figure that came with the YPS magazine was sometimes distributed not with its correct weapon, but with an Action Force rifle. Action Force figures were first produced in 1982 by Palitoy Limited and released in two waves. This could indicate that the figure included with the magazine was a Kenner, since Palitoy only distributed.

Some photographs have been obtained from the site http://www.raumhafen.de/

In issue 510 of the German magazine YPS, an Imperial Stormtrooper (Hoth Battle Gear) figure was included, known in German as “Der Stormtrooper des Imperiums,” and colloquially as the Snowtrooper. This magazine featured comics and always included a toy with each publication.

As explained on the site http://www.raumhafen.de/, page 4 of the issue presented this character within the comic, along with page 5, which was also related to Star Wars. In the previous issue, number 509, the inclusion of this toy was promoted.

According to information presented on the same Raumhafen site, this figure was a variation of the one released by Kenner, whose main characteristics were that it was slightly smaller, had splayed legs, a scraped‑off COO, and a skirt with simple holes.

“In 2012, the OSWFC magazine included an interview with the former editor of YPS. He revealed that the Hoth Stormtrooper figure was chosen by Kenner/Parker and that the issue was selling 500,000 copies. In 1985, the price of 2.90 German marks for a YPS magazine was approximately half the price of a Kenner figure. So many children bought it and, of course, opened it. Loose figures are quite common in Germany. Despite the large print run, sealed issues today are hard to find and difficult to verify.”

Action Force was created in response to declining sales of the company’s larger Action Man line and the comparative success of Kenner’s smaller Star Wars action figures, which the company was licensed to sell in Europe.

The figures are a mix of historical military characters (for example, Desert Rat, German Storm Trooper) and more contemporary soldiers (for example, Arctic and Naval Assault). In contrast to the U.S.-centric G.I. Joe line, Action Force figures represented an international mix, including British, German, Australian, and American soldiers. However, unlike later releases, the first figures did not come with file cards featuring backstories, nor did they appear in comics other than a series of mini-comics packaged with some of the vehicles.

UHU – Italy

It seems that Palitoy was the absolute master when it came to distributing figures for promotional campaigns. This gives further support to the idea that these promotions were meant to liquidate Kenner stock, since despite Harbert holding the license for Kenner figures in Italy, the 1985 UHU promotion appears under Palitoy’s license, exactly as shown on the back of the card where the figures were sold together with the glue stick.

It is interesting that an English toy company, Palitoy, associated with the American company Kenner, partnered with a German glue manufacturer, UHU, to produce a product exclusively for the Italian market. This is easy to deduce, as all the cards and advertisements exist only in Italian, with no translations into other languages.

The special UHU offer consisted of several Kenner Ewoks that were sold together with two glue sticks. These two glue sticks and the Ewok were sold on cards similar in size to the standard Kenner figure packaging. The Ewoks that were distributed were Teebo, Paploo, Logray, Warok, and Romba.

Along with the direct sale of the Ewok figures packaged with the glue, there was an associated contest, whose prizes were:

  • 1st prize: Millennium Falcon with a 35 cm Ewok plush.
  • 2nd prize: X-Wing with a 20 cm Ewok plush.
  • 3rd prize: Speeder Bike with a 20 cm baby Ewok plush.
  • 4th prize: A vintage figure from the saga with an Ewok figure.

Colgate – Spain

From 1984 to 1985, and coinciding with the release of Return of the Jedi in Spain, the toothpaste brand Colgate launched special pack boxes in which a tube was paired with a Kenner figure and occasionally a PBP figure from the film. According to comments on the SpanishStaff forum (the thread is no longer available, https://www.starwarsspanishstuff.info/foro/viewtopic.php?t=3992), the figures were not exclusively from Return of the Jedi, but from the entire trilogy of the era. This is supported by a publication found of a certified AT-AT Driver.

Continuing with the theory behind these promotions, this may have occurred because Colgate included figures randomly according to the surplus available from the Kenner factory. Even so, it seems that it was more common to find this promotion featuring figures associated with Return of the Jedi.

And in our region…

Chile was not immune to this Star Wars craze, and in fact it arrived even earlier than the promotions seen in Europe.

SAVORY – Chile

Savory in Chile launched its promotion earlier, tied to the release of the previous film in the saga, The Empire Strikes Back. In 1981, this ice cream company introduced its new product, Centella, and the launch was linked to the great galactic saga. During this promotion, we obtained a coupon marked with a Millennium Falcon — a ship we were never able to redeem because we couldn’t get to the redemption location at the time, something my brother and I still regret to this day. Unfortunately, we also didn’t keep the coupon.

BONUS TRACK: BATA

First of all, Bata neither sold nor promoted any vintage Star Wars figures.

The great “Luke Escai Gómez,” on his Instagram account @the_kenner_strikes_back, posted the iconic Chilean TV commercial for Bata shoes which, without having any official license, took advantage of the film’s success to promote their classic school boots.

LUKE ESCAI GOMEZ on Instagram: “COMERCIAL ZAPATOS ESCOLARES JEDI BATA, TVN channel, February 1984. That year everyone was riding the wave of Return of the Jedi’s success and…”

The work done by @the_kenner_strikes_back has been exhaustive, as he mentions on his Instagram.

For many years, Bata sold the same “bototos” shoes, promoted by different popular characters or heroes of the moment.

“I watched hours of commercials to find it. Maybe because of its very low production (less than I remembered) they wanted to forget it. In its favor, I can say it has one well‑done detail… the Stormtroopers in the commercial are also useless. I must admit that when I watched it, I got glued to the screen, and it convinced me to ask my mother to buy me a pair…”
