Vehicle Maintenance Energizer
El Vehicle Maintenance Energizer (VME) es un accesorio lanzado por Kenner en 1982 como parte de su línea de juguetes de Star Wars. Diseñado para complementar las figuras de acción de 3.75 pulgadas, el VME simula una estación de mantenimiento utilizada por la Alianza Rebelde para reparar y recargar naves espaciales, como los X-Wing y el Halcón Milenario.
El VME venía con 8 herramientas tipo “hydrospanner” y 2 mangueras de energía con ventosas. Estas herramientas podían almacenarse en compartimentos del propio dispositivo, aunque su diseño hacía que se perdieran con facilidad durante el juego.
Inicialmente, el VME se lanzó con el empaque de The Empire Strikes Back, pero posteriormente también se distribuyó con la marca de Return of the Jedi. La caja mostraba a Chewbacca utilizando el dispositivo. Este dispositivo se hace presente en escenas del hangar de Yavin 4 .
A diferencia de otros juguetes de la línea, el VME no incluía armas ni funciones de combate. Su propósito era fomentar el juego imaginativo centrado en el mantenimiento y reparación de vehículos, ofreciendo una experiencia diferente dentro del universo de Star Wars.
Aunque comúnmente se cree que el VME es uno de los pocos accesorios de Kenner que no está basado directamente en elementos visibles de las películas, este sí aparece y fue uno de los elementos creados por los creativos de la película y no de Kenner. Tal vez las herramientas sí hayan sido creación del equipo de diseño de Kenner.
Su diseño y función reflejan el esfuerzo de Kenner por expandir el universo de Star Wars más allá de las escenas de acción, introduciendo elementos que enriquecen la narrativa y el juego creativo.
The Vehicle Maintenance Energizer (VME) is an accessory released by Kenner in 1982 as part of its Star Wars toy line. Designed to complement the 3.75‑inch action figures, the VME simulates a maintenance station used by the Rebel Alliance to repair and recharge spacecraft such as X‑Wings and the Millennium Falcon.
The VME came with 8 “hydrospanner”-type tools and 2 energy hoses with suction cups. These tools could be stored in compartments within the device itself, although their design made them easy to lose during play.
Initially, the VME was released with The Empire Strikes Back packaging, but it was later also distributed under the Return of the Jedi branding. The box featured Chewbacca using the device. This device appears in scenes set in the Yavin 4 hangar.
Unlike other toys in the line, the VME did not include weapons or combat functions. Its purpose was to encourage imaginative play focused on vehicle maintenance and repair, offering a different kind of experience within the Star Wars universe.
Although it is commonly believed that the VME is one of the few Kenner accessories not directly based on elements visible in the films, it does indeed appear and was one of the items created by the film’s creative team rather than by Kenner. The tools themselves may have been designed by Kenner’s toy development team.
