INT-4 (Interceptor)
Prototipos en Catálogos y Publicidad
En el catálogo para vendedores de Palitoy del año 1982 aparentemente aparece un prototipo de este Mini-Rig en lugar de la versión final. En una publicidad del mismo año, en revistas de Clipper, también se ocupa este prototipo.
Si se observa bien, la parte anterior es diferente, en que el cañón es simple, pero además está anclado a la parte baja del vehículo. Otros detalles son las rendijas de atrás que son más finas y por tanto más que en el producto final, la turbina del ala es más pequeña, la visagra es completamente diferente y el brazo hidraúlico blanco.
Patente
Curiosamente la patente de este juguete recién se llevó a cabo en el año 1984, particularmente el 5 de junio.
Prototypes in Catalogs and Advertising
In Palitoy’s 1982 dealer catalog, a prototype of this Mini-Rig apparently appears instead of the final version. In an advertisement from the same year, published in Clipper magazines, this prototype is also used.
If you look closely, the front section is different: the cannon is a simple one, but it is also anchored to the lower part of the vehicle. Other details include the rear vents, which are thinner and therefore more numerous than in the final product; the wing turbine is smaller; the hinge is completely different; and the hydraulic arm is white.
Patent
Curiously, the patent for this toy was only filed in 1984, specifically on June 5.
En una galaxia muy cercana hicieron su aparición unos juguetes denominados Mini-Rig, correspondientes a un pequeño vehículo diseñado, desarrollado y lanzado por Kenner para obtener un juguete de menor valor que las naves existentes en las películas. Junto a estos Mini-Rig, se lanzaron también unos Body-Rig hacia el final de la colección (los que se podrían conocer como los last 3). El Mini-Rig INT-4, (Interceptor 4) se lanzó en la segunda ola de estos juguetes en el año 1982 empaquetado con El Imperio Contraataca, y fue parte de una serie de mini-rigs que permitieron una mayor movilidad y exploración en el universo de Star Wars.
El INT-4 tenía una escotilla abatible, un cañón láser móvil, patines de aterrizaje y alas controladas a distancia para volar misiones cortas. Además, podía caber en el cuerpo de un AT-AT, ya que la caja lo mostraba dentro del juguete gigante.
El INT-4 fue lanzado inicialmente en 1982 con el empaque de El Imperio Contraataca y luego reeditado con una versión de “Oferta Especial” que incluía una figura gratuita del Comandante AT-AT y una calcomanía amarilla brillante en el reverso de su caja. Luego se volvió a publicar con una oferta de reembolso impresa de USD 1. Finalmente, el INT-4 fue reeditado en una caja de El Retorno del Jedi en 1983 y luego cancelado.
Canonización por Atari
Los amigos de @thekennerrun y @the_kenner_strikes_back han notado de forma espectacular que el INT-4 aparece en el videojuego The Empire Strikes Back de Atari distribuido por Parker (partner Kenner). Además de haberlo revelado en un video en sus canales de Instagram, fue tema dentro del capítulo 26. “El momento Kenner” en el canal La Caverna del Niñosaurio.
Cómic conmemorativo
En el año 2023 Marvel lanzó un cómic por los 40 años de “El Regreso del Jedi” llamado “Star Wars: Ewoks”. En esta historia aparece un deteriorado (esencialmente ya no tiene su cañón), pero funcional, INT-4 manipulado por un ewok, con lo que este Mini-Rig pasó a ser parte de la historia oficial del universo Star Wars e implícitamente podría ser que el INT4 participó en la batalla de Endor. Por lo derechos del mismo, publico portada, créditos y sólo las páginas donde aparece el juguete.
Publicidad
Durante la colección Regreso del Jedi, se lanzó publicidad de mini-rigs del Imperio Contraataca junto con otros del Imperio Contraataca.
- En el caso de Parker, se mencionaban como nuevos, los asociados a esta colección, el AST-5 y el ISP-6. Este último lo destacaron ya que al ser blanco, los detalles se pierden.
- En el caso de Meccano, aparecen como nuevos no sólo estos mini-rigs, sino que también el CAP-2 y el INT-4.
- En el caso de Clipper, ninguno aparece como nuevo.

In a galaxy very close to ours, a series of toys known as Mini-Rigs made their appearance — small vehicles designed, developed, and released by Kenner to offer a lower-priced toy compared to the ships seen in the films. Alongside these Mini-Rigs, a few Body-Rigs were also released toward the end of the collection (often referred to as the “last 3”). The INT-4 Mini-Rig (Interceptor 4) was launched in the second wave of these toys in 1982, packaged under The Empire Strikes Back, and was part of a series of mini-rigs that allowed greater mobility and exploration within the Star Wars universe.
The INT-4 featured a flip-open hatch, a movable laser cannon, landing skis, and remotely controlled wings for short missions. Additionally, it could fit inside the body of an AT-AT, as the box showed it stored within the giant toy.
The INT-4 was initially released in 1982 with The Empire Strikes Back packaging and later reissued in a “Special Offer” version that included a free AT-AT Commander figure and a bright yellow sticker on the back of the box. It was then released again with a printed USD $1 rebate offer. Finally, the INT-4 was reissued in a Return of the Jedi box in 1983 and subsequently discontinued.
Canonization by Atari
Our friends at @thekennerrun and @the_kenner_strikes_back have spectacularly noted that the INT-4 appears in the Atari Empire Strikes Back video game distributed by Parker (a Kenner partner). In addition to revealing it in a video on their Instagram channels, it was also discussed in episode 26, “El momento Kenner,” on the La Caverna del Niñosaurio YouTube channel.
Commemorative Comic
In 2023, Marvel released a comic celebrating the 40th anniversary of “Return of the Jedi,” titled “Star Wars: Ewoks.” In this story, a deteriorated — essentially missing its cannon — but still functional INT-4 appears, operated by an Ewok. With this, the Mini-Rig officially became part of Star Wars canon, and it is implicitly possible that the INT-4 participated in the Battle of Endor. Due to publication rights, I include the cover, credits, and only the pages where the toy appears.
Advertising
During the Return of the Jedi collection, advertising was released featuring Empire Strikes Back mini-rigs alongside others from the same film.
- In Parker’s case, the mini-rigs associated with this collection — the AST-5 and ISP-6 — were highlighted as new. The latter was emphasized because, being white, its details were harder to see.
- In Meccano’s case, not only these mini-rigs appeared as new, but also the CAP-2 and INT-4.
- In Clipper’s case, none appeared as new.
