Top Toys, Juguetes Kenner en Argentina, es la empresa de juguetes que estuvo encargada de importar las líneas de jueguetes de Kenner durante el estreno de la primera y segunda películas de Star Wars. A pesar de sus esfuerzos fueron pocas las figuras que importaron, sobre todo para el Imperio Contraataca en que la economía hacía muy difícil la adquisición de juguetes importados. Según se menciona en el sitio Toy Nostalgia los cartones 20C y 21B de Kenner fueron los primeros que importó TopToys en Argentina, correspondientes a la línea de la colección Star Wars.

Es en este mismo sitio en donde se menciona que Kenner no dejaba utilizar sus campañas publicitarias en el extranjero. No he encontrado otra parte donde se mencione aquello, por lo que mi teoría es que dado a que TopToys no importó las colecciones completas, se vio obligada a realizar sus propios comerciales de figuras de Star Wars para el mercado argentino.

Para la tercera entrega de la saga, el Regreso del Jedi, Top Toys hizo sus propias figuras, incluyendo en su lanzamiento a Osito Ewok (que corresponde a la figura de Chief Chirpa); Logray, Brujo de la Tribu Ewok; Luke Skywalker, Maestro Jedi; Yoda, El Maestro Jedi, Darth Vader, Stormtrooper y Chewbacca. Otras figuras como Lando Calrsissian y Boba Fett quedaron sólo en etapa de producción.

Una de las cualidades de estas figuras y que las hacen muy deseadas en una colección vintage, por sus rarezas, es el hecho de que Top Toys hiciera moldes desde las figuras Kenner originales. Esto produjo que estas figuras fueran más pequeñas, con menos detalles, sin ningún tipo de COO y sin los orificios que permiten ubicarlas en los diferentes playset. Junto con esto, como se puede ver en el detalle de los cartones en Figuras Vintage Star Wars Return of the Jedi – Jhantor Lars, estos tienen una burbuja más pequeña que los lanzados por Kenner. En su línea propia del Regreso del Jedi, TopToys generó tres cartones diferentes, que están catalogados como 17, al presentar 12 figuras de la colección “anterior” y 5 nuevos para El Regreso del Jedi.

Otra particularidad son el hecho de haber rebautizado a los personajes según la idiosincrasia de Argentina, ocupando nombres “locales” para algunos de estos. R2-D2 pasó a ser “Arturito”, mientras que Chief Chirpa es simplemente el “El Osito Ewok”, y si bien Lando Calrissian mantiene su nombre, su descripción es “el amigo de Han Solo”.

Sin duda TopToys hizo historia importando algunas de estas figuras en la Argentina de aquellos años, pero más historia hizo con la fabricación de esas figuras de acción con una marca propia y que las hacen únicas dentro de una colección vintage de la saga Star Wars.

Top Toys, Kenner Toys in Argentina, is the toy company that was responsible for importing Kenner’s toy lines during the release of the first and second Star Wars films. Despite their efforts, only a few figures were imported, especially for The Empire Strikes Back, as the economy made the acquisition of imported toys very difficult. According to what is mentioned on the site Toy Nostalgia, the 20C and 21B Kenner cardbacks were the first ones imported by TopToys in Argentina, corresponding to the Star Wars collection line.

It is on this same site where it is mentioned that Kenner did not allow its advertising campaigns to be used abroad. I have not found any other source mentioning this, so my theory is that since TopToys did not import the complete collections, it was forced to create its own Star Wars figure commercials for the Argentine market.

For the third installment of the saga, Return of the Jedi, Top Toys produced its own figures, including in its release Osito Ewok (corresponding to the Chief Chirpa figure); Logray, Brujo de la Tribu Ewok; Luke Skywalker, Maestro Jedi; Yoda, El Maestro Jedi; Darth Vader; Stormtrooper; and Chewbacca. Other figures such as Lando Calrissian and Boba Fett remained only in the production stage.

One of the qualities of these figures — and what makes them highly sought after in a vintage collection due to their peculiarities — is the fact that Top Toys created molds based on the original Kenner figures. This resulted in figures that were smaller, with fewer details, without any COO markings, and without the peg holes that allow them to be placed on various playsets. Along with this, as can be seen in the cardback details at Figuras Vintage Star Wars Return of the Jedi – Jhantor Lars, these have a smaller bubble than those released by Kenner. In its own Return of the Jedi line, TopToys produced three different cardbacks, catalogued as 17, presenting 12 figures from the “previous” collection and 5 new ones for Return of the Jedi.

Another peculiarity is the renaming of characters according to Argentine idiosyncrasy, using “local” names for some of them. R2‑D2 became “Arturito,” while Chief Chirpa is simply “El Osito Ewok,” and although Lando Calrissian keeps his name, his description is “el amigo de Han Solo.”

Without a doubt, TopToys made history by importing some of these figures into Argentina at the time, but made even more history by manufacturing those action figures under its own brand, making them unique within a vintage Star Wars collection.
