Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer Action Playset
El Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer fue uno de los juguetes más grandes, y ciertamente uno de los más extraños, de la línea de Star Wars de Kenner. ¿Era un vehículo, un playset o un objeto de lo más peculiar?
Esta imagen del concepto del juguete ha sido rescatada desde el sitio de The Archive Database, y proviene de una diapositiva utilizada en una presentación interna de Kenner.
Este arte conceptual prácticamente habla por sí mismo. Probablemente data de las etapas más tempranas del desarrollo del juguete. En este concepto se puede apreciar un cañón no muy al estilo de Star Wars y que claramente no se parece en nada al que finalmente Kenner lanzó en producción. Que por cierto se basó en el molde del cañón del Millenium Falcon. Claramente, no sólo se modificó el estilo del cañón, sino también su ubicación, pasando a estar al frente.
En este arte conceptual del juguete, Luke, en aparentemente en su outfit de Bespin, aparece como prisionero en el fondo contra la pared. Este encarcelamiento no existe en la versión final del juguete, pero existe algo similar en que desde el techo se puede dejar a una figura colgado desde sus pies.
Esta fotografía proveniente del catálogo de vendedores de Kenner Canada de 1980 aparece una Leia colgando como prisionera dentro del Star Destroyer. Algunas características interesantes de esta descripción es el hecho de que se menciona que es un Playset que representa una porción del Star Destroyer de Darth Vader. Además, se caracteriza a la cámara de meditación como una cámara de Bacta con luz para revitalizar la fuerza de Vader. El puente de comando aparecen todos los cazarecompensas que se tenían hasta la fecha para recrear la escena de la película, junto con caracterizar la interacción que provee el juguete. Otro punto interesante es la asa que se tiene en el fondo azul y la no existencia de los soportes para tomarlo desde abajo.
En este prototipo de la caja se insiste con tener a una Leia capturada, siendo ahora en su vestimenta de Bespin. Esta fotografía aparece también en el Catálogo de la Feria del Juguete Kenner de 1980, cuya descripción es la siguiente.

En el catálogo para la navidad de 1980 de JCPenny, aparece también esta fotografía con Leia Bespin de cabeza, y acá se habla del Grand Emperador y no del Gran Visier.
En el catálogo comercial de Palitoy del año 1982 aparecen Leia y Luke Bespin colgados, capturados por el Imperio. De los sucesos en la película, desde “cierto punto de vista”, Leia estuvo capturada por el Imperio y Luke casi lo fue. En este catálogo se ve con lujo de detalle la cámara de meditación de Vader con la luz roja en todo su esplendor.
Conceptos Finales
En la versión productiva, aparece que la cámara es de meditación, sin dejar ninguna duda al respecto. Se tiene una representación de un holograma, lo que permitía revivir la comunicación de Vader con el Emperador, a pesar de que este último aún no existía como figura. Para Kenner acá la comunicación vuelve a aparecer contra el Gran Visier, que puede ser otro nombre interesante para el Emperador. Otra de las descripciones menciona explícitamente que la forma de tomar el playset es con el antebrazo hacia adelante y el otro soportando las esquinas.

Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer was one of the largest — and certainly one of the strangest — toys in Kenner’s Star Wars line. Was it a vehicle, a playset, or simply one of the most peculiar objects ever released?
This image of the toy concept was recovered from The Archive Database site and comes from a slide used in an internal Kenner presentation.
This conceptual artwork practically speaks for itself. It likely dates from the earliest stages of the toy’s development. In this concept, you can see a cannon not very “Star Wars‑like,” clearly nothing like the one Kenner ultimately released. That final cannon was based on the mold of the Millennium Falcon cannon. Not only was the cannon’s style changed, but also its placement, moving to the front.
In this conceptual artwork, Luke — apparently in his Bespin outfit — appears as a prisoner in the back against the wall. This imprisonment does not exist in the final version of the toy, although something similar does: from the ceiling, a figure can be hung upside‑down by its feet.
This photograph, from the 1980 Kenner Canada dealer catalog, shows a Leia hanging as a prisoner inside the Star Destroyer. Some interesting characteristics of this description include the fact that it is referred to as a playset representing a portion of Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer. Additionally, the meditation chamber is described as a Bacta chamber with a light to revitalize Vader’s strength. The command bridge shows all the bounty hunters available at the time to recreate the movie scene, along with descriptions of the toy’s interactive features. Another interesting point is the handle visible in the blue background and the absence of the lower supports used to hold it from underneath.

In the 1980 JCPenney Christmas catalog, this photograph also appears with Leia Bespin hanging upside‑down, and here the text refers to the “Grand Emperor” instead of the “Grand Vizier.”
In Palitoy’s 1982 trade catalog, Leia and Luke Bespin appear hanging, captured by the Empire. From the events of the film, “from a certain point of view,” Leia was indeed captured by the Empire and Luke nearly was. In this catalog, Vader’s meditation chamber can be seen in great detail, with the red light in all its splendor.
Final Concepts
In the production version, the chamber is clearly identified as a meditation chamber. A hologram representation is included, allowing kids to recreate Vader’s communication with the Emperor — even though the Emperor did not yet exist as an action figure. For Kenner, this communication again appears with the “Grand Vizier,” which may be another interesting name for the Emperor. Another description explicitly mentions that the correct way to hold the playset is with one forearm forward and the other supporting the corners.
